Case Studies in Emergency Medicine 2

Finally MOTE is going to Spain. And we have picked a very special trek. We will be traversing the stunning Picos de Europa. The Picos literally translate as the "peaks of Europe" and are 20km inland from the northern coast of Spain and approximately a three hour drive from Bilbao.  You will be treated to beautiful mountain scenery, village inns, varied landscapes and wonderful company. The route is varied including green valleys, meadows, remote villages, forests and craggy uplands.

The program will focus on providing key updates in Emergency Medicine. Each session will be built around a series of case studies and will highlight the most important recent changes in management that have occurred for the topic under discussion. This will be the same format we used in 2012 in the Loire Valley. We will once again be working with Pura Aventura,  who have helped us with 4 Inca Trail trips so far, to ensure that we can put together the best combination of trekking and education.

The most popular request we have had over the past few years has been for cycling based trips. As a result we have now finalised another program for two cycling based trips in 2013.

Our program will focus on providing key updates in Emergency Medicine. Each session will be built around a series of case studies and will highlight the most important recent changes in management that have occurred for the topic under discussion.

The meeting will be built around a cycling journey through the beautiful Loire Valley. We aim to leave you with an exceptional experience that will not be forgotten. We have chosen the Loire Valley as it offers a wonderful combination of landscapes, castles, vineyards, villages and riding to suit all skill levels. At the day's end when the riding is over you  will be able to enjoy the region's great food and local wines along with the company of your fellow delegates.

6th Annual Update in Altitude and Expedition Medicine

In 2013 join MOTE for our 6th annual update in Altitude and Expedition Medicine, the academic content of which will be reinforced by our participation in one of the world’s greatest high altitude treks. We have decided to return to the Inca Trail for a 4th time after a successful and oversubscribed trips in 2009, 2010 and 2011! As with the last three trips we anticipate this one will also fill up very quickly so an early booking is recommended.

Case Studies in Emergency Medicine

This cycling based program  will offer a rich opportunity to explore some of the Adriatic Coast's most beautiful scenery. The academic program will be built around a series of case studies that will highlight the key points in relation to the management of medical emergencies that occur as a result of our interaction with our environment.

Bring your passion for cycling to life with an unforgettable guided cycling trip around the Emilia Romagna area of Northern Italy. Our local guides will make you feel like a local as you pedal through bustling Italian villages, explore rustic olive groves or test your limits on the same roads as the resident Pro's. This is one trip you will want to do over and over again.

As an extra special opportunity we anticipate that the 2013 Giro d'Italia will pass through the local area during these dates. This has yet to be confirmed as the dates have not been formally announced but we are fairly confident in this regard.  This is one of cycling's premier events and along with the Tour de France is one of the sports "Grand Tours". The exact route won't be known yet but if close to our location it will afford an opportunity to ride on the course and watch the riders go by. Alternatively if a bit further we can arrange a coach to take us to watch the race. It may also be possible to arrange VIP tickets for the hospitality suites.

Why go back to big Sky for a 3rd year in a row?  Because our delegates tell us they loved it so much in both 2011 and 2012. After experiencing genuine Montana hospitality and some truly amazing skiing it is easy to understand how they feel.

Big Sky has access to more skiing than any other resort in the USA. There are over 5,500 skiiable acres to explore with a vertical drop of 4,350 feet. January 2012 saw many US ski resorts with record low snowfalls but this was not an issue at Big Sky which once again had great coverage.

Big Sky has long green runs for the beginner, stunning cruisers of up to 6 miles in length for the intermediate and some of the most challenging black runs in the country. For the truly adventurous there are dozens of steep alpine chutes or equip yourself with a beacon and a buddy to explore the incredible backcountry.

Following repeated requests MOTE is finally heading to Torres del Paine.  We have put together a program that will focus on providing key updates in critical care and wilderness medicine. Each session will be built around a series of case studies and will highlight the most important recent changes in management that have occurred for the topic under discussion.

The meeting will incorporate 2 full days of presentations in Puerto Natales which will be complemented by a series of 5 short evening workshops presented at our campsites  as we trek through the Torres del Paine National Park to complete the famous “Circuit” route.

Patagonia is one of the world’s great trekking destinations and the circuit of the “Towers of Paine” deserves a spot on most people’s Top 10 spectacular treks. Here you will have the opportunity to experience every aspect of Patagonian scenery: mountains, lakes, glaciers, forests and grasslands.

In 2012 join MOTE for our 5th annual update in Altitude and Expedition Medicine, the academic content of which will be reinforced by our participation in one of the world’s greatest high altitude treks. We have decided to return to Mt Kilimanjaro due to overwhelming demand. We are initially planning a maximum of 29 delegates and  anticipate that this trip will fill up very quickly so an early booking is recommended.

We have chosen to climb Kili by the 7B Shira route. This is a longer route involving 7 nights on the mountain. This will really give you a feel for the expedition environment as well as allow extra time for optimal acclimitisation so as to maximise your summit success. This route also keeps us somewhat out of synch with the more popular and shorter routes so as to avoid the “crowds”. To add to the magic we have picked a Full Moon night for our summit attempt. This is the same route we walked in 2008 and we believe it is probably the best route on the mountain.

The popularity of our Latitude Zero meetings has prompted us to host a short workshop at the Telo Islands Lodge located in the Pulau Batu Batu region. This short program will incorporate seven two hour workshops providing a contemporary update on a range of current and topical clinical issues.

Telo Island Lodge is located in the Batu islands a group approximately 180 nautical miles from the city of Padang on the island of Sumatra. The Batu group sits between Siberut, the northern most island of the Mentawai group and the island of Nias. The lodge is on the island of Sibranun in a smaller grouping again that is known as the “Telos”.

Yellowstone is one of the world's great wilderness environments. Over 2 million acres in size. The largest high altitude lake in the USA. Mountains, lakes, rivers and canyons. The world's biggest petrified forest. Incredible geothermal features. Nordic skiing. Snowmobile tours. Snowshoeing. Grizzly bears and the world's most famous geyser - "Old Faithful". In keeping with the environment we present a short series of sessions relating to the medical consequences that can arise when we come into conflict with our environment. Each session will be interactive and incorporate a number of relevant case histories.

SNOWCOACH TOURS - Part of what makes a "Winter in Wonderland" experience so special is a unique mode of oversnow transportation. The customised snowcoach complete with tracks and skis and large clear viewing windows, spacious seating and headroom. Alternatively, why not gain a completely new perspective on yellowstone park or surrounding area on a SNOWMOBILE  and feel the wind on your cheeks. If exercise is what your after try SNOWSHOEING through some of the most magnificent country on earth.

Altitude & Expedition Medicine Review

In 2010 in response to many requests, MOTE will run a program on the historic Kokoda Track.  Our popular program on Altitude and Expedition Medicine will stimulate your mind whilst the challenge of one of the world's most spectacular treks will challenge your body.

There are many organisations which provide the logistics and support to walk the Kokoda Track. We have researched these extensively and were highly impressed with Adventure Kokoda which is why we have chosen them to work with in running this meeting.

You can easily fall in love with Silver Star’s fairytale village. Inspired by a typical nineteenth century British Columbian mining town era with Victorian architecture, this town is a true winter wonderland. Brightly coloured store fronts and boarded sidewalks provide a unique ambiance that radiates fun, enthusiasm and excitement for the whole family.

Guests are attracted to the warmth and safety of the town where service and friendliness are as honoured as the values of a time gone by. It’s the size of your smile that counts at Silver Star. A perfect venue for a series of 3 Emergency Medicine workshops to complement the Big White Update in Paediatric Emergency and Critical Care.

This meeting will present a range of topics in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and Critical Care that will be useful and of interest to EM practitioners, General Practitioners, Nurses, Paramedics and Medical Students.

In fact, if you crave adventure on the ski slopes coupled with the diversity of Paediatric Emergency Medicine and Critical Care, this is the meeting for you. Our sessions are theoretical, practical, case based and interactive.

FAQ's in Emergency Medicine

In 2014 MOTE will visit Japan for the first time and we have put together a very special trip. We have chosen to base ourselves at Nozawa Onsen a truly spectacular ski resort close to Nagano City.

This resort combines great skiing to suit all levels with the charm and beauty of a traditional hot spring village. Nozawa offers a rich cultural experience in a village that has maintained much of its traditional architecture combined with incredible snow conditions. In keeping with a location where one can experience cold snow and hot onsen we have chosen the conference theme as "Medicine and Extremes of Temperature". The meeting will not only explore the clinical effects and management of thermal syndromes but also the current therapeutic applications of heat and cold.
